Is EMPEROR MUTSUSHITO famous or infamous?
I would say famous and infamous. He is perhaps Japan's greatest emperor. In 1867 a group of samurai and aristocrats pressured the shogun (Military governor) into resigning and restored the emperor, the young Mutsuhito, into returning to imperial rule. His reign from 1868 to 1912 is known as the "Meiji era" or the "Meiji Restoration". During this time Japan became a modern world power. Japan built modern industries, especially coal mines, textile mills, shipyards, etc. Top priority was given to building up Japan's military. With advice from European military experts the government built naval shipyards and military arsenals. Within 20 years Japan had the best military force in East Asia. In 1889 the government leaders produced Japan's first constitution. However Japan was not a democracy. Power was in the hands of the government leaders. The Japanese people had little or no power. As the country modernized and industrialized Japanese were sent to other countries to learn. For instance they learned about beer manufacture by sending people to Germany. The Imperial Navy was patterned after the British Imperial navy. Unfortunately in 1895 Japan began to build an empire like European nations did. After defeating China in a brief war Japan took control of Taiwan. In 1910 Japan took control of Korea after victory in the Russo-Japanese War of 1905. Then Japan expanded control of Manchuria. This gave Japan, a country poor in natural resources, access to raw materials. So I would say that Mutsuhito was a great emperor but his policies eventually led to the failure of democracy in Japan and the rise of Japanese militarism and then to war.
