Aren't government laws supposed to favor americans?

Why would our own government consistently decide to make it easier for tainted products from communist china to come here or highly defective products that endanger the lives of americans. Besides all the stuff we have heard in the news, I read a story the other day about how there are toxins found in many common household products. Why does our government so consistently seem to care very little about the american worker and the american consumer? After all, isn't this the great majority of what makes up america? and aren't workers and consumers the constituency of government?
