Do MMS messages on AT&T use the internet?

I have a texting and data plan but not unlimited and I noticed that when I send/receive mms messages theres a little E at the top which indicates the internet. Also when I am on the internet and i hit the end key it still says that the internet is being used, and I have to go under wireless manager to shut it off. I have a BlackJack 2. thanks
